Newfoundland – Part I

July 9, 2019 – July 20, 2019

The ferry arrived to the island of Newfoundland just as the sun was rising. It had been a long night, neither of us really sleeping much on the ferry despite the ample leg room and comfortable, semi-reclining chairs. We had originally thought that we would get a campsite close to the ferry for the day and then head the next morning to Stephenville in order to take Piper to the vet, but as we drove off the ferry, Derek said he felt pretty good, so we drove the 165 km to Stephenville.

San Ignacio Miní

March 11, 2019 – March 13, 2019

The mission at San Ignacio Miní was built in 1666 and is one of many missions built by the Jesuits in what the Spanish called the Province of Paraguay, an area which today includes parts of Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil. The Mission was built with the aim of converting the local Guaraní people to Christianity, but it also protected the people from ongoing wars and from the slave trade. The Mission was abandoned after the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767, destroyed, along with about 30 other missions in the area, by later invaders and was soon after overcome by the rainforest. Restorations of the site began in 1940.

The Island of Chiloe

December 28, 2018 – January 1, 2019

Our First Roadside Breakdown, a Lovely Refugio and a Church Across a Gorge.

July 8, 2018 – July 12, 2018

We were heading up a hill, when suddenly Derek took his foot off of the gas and the truck responded, instantly slowing to a crawl.  I looked at Derek, I looked to the road immediately ahead, and then back at Derek.  There was no animal, no debris, no tope in the road.  “What’s up?”, I asked.  “I have no steering”, Derek said.

Costa Rica, Good to See you Again!

April 16 – April 19, 2018

The crossing into Costa Rica on the Nicaraguan side was chaotic to say the least. We had no idea where we were supposed to park, which building we needed to head to first and we were immediately approached by “helpers”, people who hang out at the border, walk you from one building to another and tell you what you need to do next, all for a propina (tip). We had not used one since we had accidentally used one when crossing into Belize (we thought he worked for the border agency and didn’t realize we needed to tip him until the process was almost complete).
