Nova Scotia, Part II

June 5, 2019 – June 14, 2019

On the road again, we drove along the shores of the Atlantic Ocean south of Halifax, through small, authentic fishing villages like Terrence Bay, before making our way to the touristic Peggy’s Cove. We had hoped to free camp at the visitor’s centre, but were told it was not allowed, so we continued on to the nearby ocean front King Neptune Campground. We entered the registration office/home of the owner, where Derek greeted the man by saying, “And so you must be King Neptune!” (which got quite a laugh from Granny in the corner). We then were shocked to hear that our camping spot for the night was going to cost $40. Pricey by Canadian standards, super pricey compared to what we had been paying in South America….not all is perfect about being back in Canada or maybe Derek just had to pay special price!

San Ignacio Miní

March 11, 2019 – March 13, 2019

The mission at San Ignacio Miní was built in 1666 and is one of many missions built by the Jesuits in what the Spanish called the Province of Paraguay, an area which today includes parts of Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil. The Mission was built with the aim of converting the local Guaraní people to Christianity, but it also protected the people from ongoing wars and from the slave trade. The Mission was abandoned after the expulsion of the Jesuits in 1767, destroyed, along with about 30 other missions in the area, by later invaders and was soon after overcome by the rainforest. Restorations of the site began in 1940.

The Back Road to Ibague and the Tatacoa Desert.

June 29, 2018 – July 2,2018

We got on the road about 8 or 9 am for the long slow drive along the back country roads from Salento to Ibague.  We knew what the first 20 kilometres of so were going to be like, as we had ridden down it on a bike the day before with Doug and Lindsey, but we were excited to see what else the day would bring.
