Ontario

August 10, 2019 – August 19, 2019

One of the best things about travelling the way that we were was the flexibility and freedom we had….if we liked a place, we would stay an extra day or two, if we didn’t like a place, we would move on. Plans were never written in stone, and we had altered our route many times on the trip in order to avoid areas where there might be a bit of civil unrest, or to take a detour to see something of interest that was previously unknown to us.

Newfoundland – Part II

July 20, 2019 – August 1, 2019

Just south of St. John’s, Newfoundland is Cape Spear, the eastern most point in North America. Since we had driven to the most southerly point you can drive to in South America, it was only right that we visit Cape Spear!

Halifax and Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia

May 22, 2019 – June 5, 2019

We were pleased when Piper walked casually into her kennel for the short flight from Toronto to Halifax (a cookie really does go a long way with her), and after a night in a hotel near the airport outside of Halifax, we taxied into the city and to our home for the next week, a room in a shared Airbnb house in central Halifax.

Cordillera Blanca…Lakes, Glaciers, High Altitude Hikes.

August 19, 2018 – August 24, 2018

The Cordillera Blanca (White Mountain Range) of Peru, according to our guide book, is,

“the world’s highest tropical mountain range and encompasses some of South America’s highest mountains”

As we drove, snow and ice capped peaks began to appear behind the nearer mountains that lined the valleys. The steep valley slopes were terraced and green evidencing centuries of farming knowledge. We drove through rural town centres, filled with fruit and produce markets, traditionally dressed indigenous locals, and backpacking tourists readying themselves for long treks in the Andes of Peru.

A German Brewery and a Swiss Garden

July 23, 2018 – July 25, 2018

We knew we wouldn’t make it all the way to Puerto Lopez after leaving Laguna Quilotoa, but we headed west to see how far we could get before dark. We drove downhill almost all the way, through winding, mountain highway, rainforest on either side and views for miles.  We started high above the clouds, drove through a layer of cloudy mist to great views under overcast skies, then through one more layer of cloud as we neared the coast.

Costa Rica, Good to See you Again!

April 16 – April 19, 2018

The crossing into Costa Rica on the Nicaraguan side was chaotic to say the least. We had no idea where we were supposed to park, which building we needed to head to first and we were immediately approached by “helpers”, people who hang out at the border, walk you from one building to another and tell you what you need to do next, all for a propina (tip). We had not used one since we had accidentally used one when crossing into Belize (we thought he worked for the border agency and didn’t realize we needed to tip him until the process was almost complete).
