Newfoundland – Part I

The ferry arrived to the island of Newfoundland just as the sun was rising. It had been a long night, neither of us really sleeping much on the ferry despite the ample leg room and comfortable, semi-reclining chairs. We had originally thought that we would get a campsite close to the ferry for the day and then head the next morning to Stephenville in order to take Piper to the vet, but as we drove off the ferry, Derek said he felt pretty good, so we drove the 165 km to Stephenville.

The Island of Chiloe

December 28, 2018 – January 1, 2019

At about 180 km long and 50 km wide, Isla Grande de Chiloe is the second largest island in South America. Our guidebook described the island as a home to fiercely independent sea-faring people, cut off from the mainland until about 50 years ago. It made the island sound mystical, with its shroud of early morning fog, its mix of Unesco World Heritage wooden churches and its local lore full of stories about witches and trolls.

In Search of Whales and Boobies

July 25, 2018 – July 27, 2018

We had decided in Quito, after much discussion, that we would not make the side trip out to the Galapagos Islands.  Friends we had met on the road had offered to watch Piper for us if we went, but we decided that if we did go we wanted to do it on a 7 or 8 day cruise, plus maybe spend some time on one of the islands, and that it could quickly become a 10 or 12 day trip.  That’s a long time to leave Piper, and we would have to find a place to stash the truck.  In addition, the trip would easily cost or $8,000 Canadian dollars, and when Derek calculated how many kilometres we could drive for that much money (a lot!), we decided that the Galapagos would have to wait.
