Heading into Uruguay and Colonia del Sacramento

March 14, 2019 – March 22, 2019

We took a few days to drive south from Iguazú to the border town of Gualeguaychu, where we once again went through the process of getting Piper’s paper work in order before driving Seymour over a bridge and into his last South American country of the trip. We arrived in Uruguay, resupplied our fridge (at remarkably high prices!), and made our way to Colonia del Sacramento.

Villa de Angostura

December 13, 2018 – December 14, 2018

We had read about a restaurant in the town of Villa de Angostura that we wanted to visit, called Tinto Bistro. It is run by the brother of the Queen of Holland (Queen Maxima is originally from Argentina).

The restaurant was great. For starters we had trout wrapped in pastry and a veal and salmon tartar. For our main dish Derek ordered ribeye steak, and I had lamb. We also had beautiful sweet deserts. We also ordered a very nice bottle of Argentinian Syrah red wine from the lower end of a list that topped out in the Cdn$1000s. We’re pretty sure that in Canada, the wine alone would have cost more than the whole meal. This all, after having washed up and put on clean clothes in the camper in our stealth camping spot in a parking lot close to downtown….we do what we can.

La Paz, Bolivia

September 25, 2018 – October 6, 2018

We decided that we would camp at the secure parking area at the La Paz International Airport, which is technically in the city of El Alto, adjacent to, but high above La Paz.  It was not a beautiful spot to camp, there was nowhere really to sit outside, but we had 24 hour security, 24 hour toilet access, and it was nice to be able to sit in the terminal with wifi access and drink a $5 coffee while listening to America’s greatest hits of the eighties….felt like a little piece of home.

Arequipa

September 11, 2018 – September 18, 2018

Derek made arrangements for new tires for the truck in the Peruvian city of Arequipa, and they didn’t come too soon…we were losing pea sized chunks of rubber and had started to lose air and although we hadn’t had a real flat tire since Colombia, we were anxious to get the new tires installed before we headed into the remote regions we were hoping to visit in Bolivia.  We decided it was also a good time for new brake fluid and to replace the brake pads.

Mérida

Mérida is the capital of the state of Yucatan. We had had a hard time deciding where to camp in Mérida. There were some places close to the old city centre, but the entrances sounded like they might be tight for our truck and camper. We ended up deciding on a campground on the northern edge of the city and we were happy with our choice.
