It takes a village….

Well, we are now officially homeless!  We handed over the keys to our house to our tenants yesterday, convoyed in the truck and my car for some last errands around Calgary, then drove out to our tiny cabin in British Columbia.  We will be back and forth between the cabin and Calgary for about the next month while we wait for hurricane season in Mexico to end, then we will start our drive south.

Driving to the cabin.

You’ve heard the saying “It takes a village to raise a child”….well, apparently, it also takes a village to get Derek and I to South America!  Friends and family have been so generous with offers to help  with so many things….from taking care of house plants, to acting as property managers, to handling our mail while we are away, or being our local representative for any financial matters that may arise while we are away.  So if we haven’t said it before, THANK YOU!   Being able to leave the country for so long and not having to worry about things at home is a huge gift, and we really appreciate it.

I also want to thank those of you who have shared our excitement for this trip and encouraged us to do the trip.  It is not easy to commit to be away from those you love for such a long time, and I did question sometimes whether it was the right thing to do.

Okay, enough of that!

We woke up to a beautiful day at the cabin and decided to do some yoga.  Knowing that we are going to be spending a lot of time sitting in the truck over the next year or two, we have decided to try and get into a routine of some sort of exercise each day.  Not a bad place to practice yoga, I think!

We needed a few groceries so we drove the 50 km from our cabin into Golden, British Columbia.  We decided to take our dog Piper for a walk along the Kicking Horse River.

Love the fall colours.

And now we are sitting in a pub using the WIFI.  Not a bad first day!
